And thus begins Hazel Spencer's first essay on the topic of meddlesome relatives for English 201 at Central State Teacher's College, later CMU, in 1934. She typed two-page papers on various topics and they were listed and graded in what was referred to as a Manuscript Cover, like a portfolio in which her papers, folded in half, were retained for the class. Other topics she wrote about were: domineering ideals, getting over love affairs, modern habits, going to church, and my favorite, the spell of the unattainable. Hazel earned As and Bs.
