Carroll
Arnett (Gogisgi), 1927-1997, was one of the most prolific poets of the Cherokee
Nation and was nationally recognized. At CMU he taught as a professor of
English, 1970-1997. He wrote more than 300 poems and stories under the name
Arnett or Gogisgi. In 1974 he received the National Endowment for the Arts
Fellowship in Creative Writing. His
papers, 6 cubic feet, mainly include letters, photographs, his books, and his
published writing in English, Dutch and Cherokee, mostly in publications of
Indigenous Peoples, some of which he edited, and his letters and collected
material about the American Indian Movement standoff at Wounded Knee, South
Dakota, in 1973 and resulting impact. The first creative writing scholarship at
CMU was established in his honor in 1998.
