Save Michigan History Disaster Response Workshops!

We are excited to announce that registration is now open for our 2026 Save Michigan History Disaster Response Workshops! Please see the attached flyer and feel free to share with your audiences or anyone you think would be interested in attending one of these workshops. Below is additional information that helps describe the initiative, which we have been using in our outreach efforts thus far. We would greatly appreciate any assistance in spreading the word, or any recommendations you may have for organizations that would be interested in passing this message along. A social media post from the Archives is also currently in the works.

The Archives of Michigan is excited to announce an initiative to create a cohort of “cultural heritage first responders” who are trained to take action when a natural or human-made disaster impacts Michigan’s historical records. Over the course of two years, the Archives, in partnership with instructors from the Northeast Document Conservation Center (NEDCC), will offer six in-person, hands-on emergency response and disaster preparedness workshops across the state. {Marian note: NEDCC is an excellent resource. I highly recommend these workshops.}In these workshops, NEDCC will educate and train more than 150 volunteer “first responders” that will specialize in mitigation and salvage recovery, specifically for cultural heritage repositories and local government offices. The Archives of Michigan will oversee and manage this volunteer cohort, fostering communications and maintaining a network that can be activated in times of need.

Registration is now open for the 2026 workshops, with options to attend in Marquette, Roscommon, and Lansing. These workshops are in-person only, and attendees need only attend one event to receive the training. Registration costs $25 per person, and lunch is included. Scholarships are available if needed.

Seats are limited, so register soon! For more information, visit: https://www.michigan.gov/archivesofmichigan/events. To register, visit: https://form.jotform.com/seekingmichigan/smh-workshop.

If you have any questions regarding the workshops, please reply to this email (govarchives@michigan.gov). If you have already received training in disaster planning and response, and are interested in joining the cohort, please also reply to this email.

Kindest regards,

Erika
