Mark "the Bird" Fidrych documented in Channel 9 & 10 News spring 1979

Mark "the Bird" Fidrych was one of my favorite Detroit Tigers when I was a kid. Channel 9 & 10 News filmed him at spring training in 1979. We saw him yesterday while processing and describing 9&10 moving image film. What a rush from the past! He took off his cap for an interview and all his curls popped out and I immediately recognized him. The rest of the film segment is mostly of him throwing. I recall fondly the iron on Fidrych decals in the newspaper that you ironed onto your dad's undershirts. We had to buy two newspapers to do two shirts. The washer ruined them, but they were fun while they lasted. This was before today's variety of shirts with company brands, political statements, Disney images, and rock band names. It's hard for current college students to imagine this. No, dinosaurs were not roaming the earth then. Fidrych energized baseball. He pitched at one of the few Tiger games I attended. We loved him and his antics on the mound! He was so fun to watch and a wonderful pitcher. I don't remember any details of the game, but it gives me joy as I can clearly hear my sister Alice laughing in the stands next to me about his antics in my memory. Here are a few fun shots of him from 9&10 .
