Michigan aerial negatives on a reel
Today I saw a format in a size I've never seen before in an archives: a 1970 metal reel of 9.5 inch aerial negatives. The reel was stored in a black, plastic Kodak canister. In the Clarke, we have a lot of oversized aerial photographs, in black and white or color prints, or flat negatives, some of which are nailed to wooden boards. We also have a lot of film, some of which arrives on metal reels, but I've never seen a rolled negative on the original reel in this size. Here you can see the film on the reel and the black, plastic storage canister and matching lid. The Kodak label is immediately recognizable. The leader (blank film) at the beginning of the reel is reflective in the photograph. Next you can see the first image, a rectangular aerial. Aerial images were and are taken from airplanes with special cameras by aerial mapping companies.
