Katie Higley graduation photos

Image
Today my friend Dr. Brittany Fremion and I took some graduation photos with Katie Higley, who will graduate in a week. Then President Bob Davies came out and we got some photos with him, too.  He was very interested in all the students and thanked us for helping them. We are both very proud of Katie and her many accomplishments and will miss her very much. What a privilege it is to help students discover their interests, learn and hone their skillsets, and help them on their journey.

Ukrainian archives videos

Here are two short videos, both visually stunning, I thought you'd enjoy. The first, Central State Historical Archives of Ukraine, Lviv, shows how the archives developed from a monastery with extensive holdings dating from 1370 into part of the national archives, its original medieval murals, volumes, bookcases, doors, interiors, and ends with a brief view of current staff digitizing the volumes to preserve these extraordinary collections. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kr-3FUtyGbc. This plays for 4 minutes and 37 seconds. The second is titled Unity Traditions in Centuries and shows more gorgeous views of early manuscripts and documents while telling how the leaders of Lviv and Ukraine joined forces to fight the enemy, a tradition that continues today. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGzsl0UWDeY.  This plays for under 2 minutes. The videos come from in an email to me from the Association of Canadian Archivists which held a special meeting on April 12, 2023 with the Director a

Wheelchairs and commercial fishing

Image
Recently we saw something on 9&10 we hadn't seen before: wheelchairs. Here we see a still image of a segment showing what is probably a volunteer group constructing new and rehabbing used wheelchairs. It's part of reel #269 filmed on June 20, 1977, location unidentified.        Also included on #269 is something else we hadn't seen before, an extended segment of a commercial fishing crew in action. Here is a still image of the crew of the Argo after they pulled in their nets. The Argo was from Leland. This segment was filmed on June 10, 1977.

The MichCon Balloon

Image
This lovely image, fact sheet and letter came to President Plachta in 1993 and he kept it in his personal papers.  MichCon used the balloon to support education, economic development and concern for the environment. They wanted Leonard and Louise Plachta to use it to fly over Central's football game versus U of Akron on Sept 2. I can't find anything proving they did this. I wonder if he was taken with the image or the notion of soaring over the stadium.

Katie Higley at SCREE

Image
Last week I visited my wonderful student Katie Higley at her SCREE (Student Creative and Research Endeavors Exhibition) poster presentation documenting her research on the use of films in MI museums. As an undergraduate she has published her findings in a peer-reviewed academic journal! Katie will graduate with a BA from CMU in May and then will attend grad school. Way to go Katie!
