Clarke's International Children's Literature Research Grant

Applications are welcome for the International Children's Literature Research Grant (ICLRG). The application packet must be received no later than May 13, 2022 to be eligible for consideration. The ICLRG will fund travel to Central Michigan University's Clarke Historical Library to conduct research using the international resources in the Clarke Historical Library's Lucile Clarke Memorial Children's Library. The winning applicant will receive $2,000 which is expected to cover transportation and living expenses while visiting the library. The ICLRG honors Dr. Susan M. Stan, a renowned expert in international and multicultural children's literature, and a generous donor to the Clarke. Dr. Stan never missed an opportunity to share her exuberant passion about international children’s literature. She taught classes as an English professor at Central Michigan University, edited resource books such as The World Through Children's Books (Scarecrow Press, 2002), and spoke at national and international children's literature conferences. Her most recent publication was Global Voices: Picture Books from Around the World (ALA Editions, 2014). In 2014 and 2016, Dr. Stan was a member of the jury for the Hans Christian Andersen Awards given by the International Board on Books for Young People. Innovative proposals that exploit the rich resources of the Lucile Clarke Memorial Children's Library are encouraged; an extensive collection of Hans Christian Andersen Award nominee books and author dossiers are among these resources. The substance of the research may be but is not limited to studies in children's literature. Applicants may propose using the collection's foreign language resources to promote scholarly endeavor. All applicants must reside in the U.S. or Canada; possess either a master’s or doctoral degree or be currently enrolled in a U.S. or Canadian doctoral program; and must be available to carry out research at the Clarke Historical Library during the summer of 2022. 25th work anniversary

Today is my 25th work year anniversary. I don't think anyone knows it but me. On July 5, 1996 I parked in the small lot west of Park Library and took the elevator to 4th floor. I had just cracked my windshield and was so embarrassed about it. My desk was in a work room with a kitchen where everyone ate, no privacy at all. My first job with a few students was processing Senator Griffin's 400 cubic foot collection. I had a brand new, huge computer that wasn't plugged in yet. It took up most of my desk space. When I taught Lib 197 we did so in a room where only I had a computer. My job has morphed so much since then. I am grateful for all the positives over the years and through my various jobs. Mostly it's been good. I try to learn from the good and the bad. Meet my summer archives processing student Brandon Horn

  Hello! I'm Brandon Horn, a senior at  Central Michigan University (CMU) studying Social Science with one more semester to go in my undergrad. During my two-month tenure over the summer, I processed CMU Athletics files, meticulously cataloging and preserving important historical documents and records. This involved examining a variety of materials, from game statistics, photographs, and event programs to media questionnaires, assisting Marian Matyn in ensuring they were accurately documented and stored from where they were previously in the Athletics Department's basement. Additionally, I played a crucial role in organizing and creating digital finding aids for these collections to help future researchers easily locate each item.   I was drawn to archival work because it allows me to connect with the past in a tangible way that tells an important part of CMU's storied past.
